Tankless Water Heater

Reimer Heating, Cooling & Plumbing provides professional heating replacement such as furnaces, boilers, heat pumps and ductless systems for homeowners across Buffalo and Erie County, with HVAC technicians teams working in Rochester, Hamburg, Cheektowaga, Albany, Syracuse and communities throughout Upstate New York. We have been doing it here since 1921, through more New York winters than any other home services company in the region.

Almost nobody decides to replace a heating system on a calm Saturday in September. The decision usually gets made in January, at eleven at night, after the third breakdown of the winter, with the house dropping a degree an hour. That is the worst possible moment to be choosing equipment, because you take whatever can be fitted fastest rather than what actually suits your home.

If your heating system is old and gave you trouble last season, the shoulder months are when you have real choices: equipment availability, time to compare options, and a scheduled installation instead of an emergency one. Call us in September and you decide. Call us in January and the weather decides.

  • We are available Day or Night when the heat goes out.
  • Every replacement is quoted upfront, with your approval before we start.
  • Licensed, background checked technicians on every installation.
  • All of our work is backed by a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

For professional heating replacement in Buffalo and Erie County, call Reimer – your first step towards a warmer, more comfortable home.

When Should You Replace Your Heating System Instead of Repairing It?

Three faults effectively end a heating system. A cracked heat exchanger in a furnace is a combustion safety problem, so the unit gets condemned rather than patched. A failed boiler section or a block leaking internally is the same story. A compressor failure on an out-of-warranty heat pump usually costs more than the remaining life is worth.

Everything else is a judgement call, and age drives it. A furnace repair at eight years old is money well spent. The identical repair on a twenty year old unit buys you one component in a system where the next failure is already queuing up behind it. Watch for these before the system quits entirely:

    • Rooms that were comfortable five years ago and are not now, with nothing about the house having changed
    • Longer and longer run times to hold the same thermostat setting
    • Repeated ignition, burner or lockout faults, always on the coldest nights
    • Gas or electric bills climbing with no change in rates or usage
    • Rust, scaling or soot around the burner compartment or the flue connection
    • A second or third repair on the same unit inside two winters

We will tell you plainly which side of that line your system sits on, and we will say so when a repair is the better spend. A quote for a new system you did not need is not how we have stayed in business for a hundred years.stems run for months at a time, these benefits can have a significant impact on both comfort and cost.

What Heating Systems Do We Replace in Buffalo and Erie County?

We replace every type of heating system found in homes across Buffalo, Erie County, Rochester and Albany, which given the age range of housing in these cities is very nearly all of them:

    • Furnace replacement: We replace forced air furnaces when the heat exchanger has cracked, parts are no longer practical to source, or repair costs are stacking up on a unit past fifteen years old. Most swaps are completed in a day.
    • Boiler replacement: We replace the boilers heating so much of the older housing here, including condensing models paired with an indirect water heater so one appliance covers heat and hot water. Near boiler piping is built correctly, which is what decides whether a boiler performs as designed.
    • Heat pumps: We install cold climate heat pumps for homeowners moving off oil or electric resistance heat, and dual fuel setups where a gas furnace should still carry the deep cold.
    • Ductless mini-split systems: We install ductless where there is no ductwork to extend, in converted attics, additions and the rooms a central system was never designed to reach.
    • Water heater replacement: We replace tank and tankless water heaters, and we quote them alongside a furnace when the two share a chimney, because replacing one changes how the other vents.

Why Your Replacement Furnace or Boiler Should Not Match the Old One

The most common mistake in a heating replacement is ordering the same size that came out. That number was set decades ago, often on a rule of thumb rather than a calculation, and in a lot of Buffalo and Erie County homes it was wrong then.

It matters more here than in milder climates. Buffalo and Erie County sit at a winter design temperature in the single digits and run one of the longest heating seasons in the country. An undersized furnace cannot hold the house through the coldest nights of the year, which is the only time it truly matters. An oversized one is worse day to day: it satisfies the thermostat in short bursts, short cycles all winter, burns out its ignition components early, and never runs long enough to push heat to the far end of the house, so the back bedroom stays cold while the hallway thermostat insists everything is fine. On a boiler, oversizing shows up as short, hot bursts that leave the radiators at the end of the loop barely warm.

The house has usually changed since the old unit went in as well. New windows, added insulation, a finished basement or an addition all move the number. We run a heat load calculation against your square footage, insulation, window area and air sealing before we quote, and more often than not the right replacement is smaller than the one coming out.

Should You Replace Like for Like, or Change Heating System?

Replacement is the one moment you get to reconsider the type of system, not just the size of it, and the right answer changes street by street across Buffalo, Erie County, Rochester and Albany.

Older homes here frequently run hydronic heat with cast iron radiators and no ductwork anywhere in the building. Replacing a boiler with another boiler is usually the sensible path, and a condensing model paired with an indirect water heater covers heat and hot water from one appliance. Forcing ductwork into a plaster and lath house is a renovation dressed up as a heating decision.

Postwar and later suburban homes in Cheektowaga, Tonawanda, Hamburg and the Rochester and Capital Region suburbs are usually forced air, where a furnace installation carries over the existing duct system, provided that ductwork is not the reason the house heats unevenly. That is worth checking at replacement, because a new furnace on undersized ducts will disappoint you in exactly the same rooms the old one did.

Where a room has no ductwork and no radiator at all, in a converted attic or an addition, adding ductless alongside the replacement is usually cleaner than stretching the new system past its capacity.

What a New Heating System Changes About Your Home’s Venting

High efficiency furnaces and boilers do not vent the way the equipment they replace did. Instead of drawing up a masonry chimney, a condensing unit vents through the sidewall in PVC and drains condensate to a nearby drain. That shift catches out more replacements in Buffalo and Erie County than any other part of the job, and there are three things worth knowing before you see a price.

The first is the chimney it leaves behind. If your old furnace or boiler shared that flue with the water heater, the water heater is now alone in a chimney far too large for it. It draws poorly, condenses flue gas and degrades the liner over time. The fix is a correctly sized liner or a power vented water heater, and it belongs in the same quote rather than turning up as a surprise six months later.

The second is where the condensate goes. Condensing furnaces and boilers produce acidic water continuously while they run, so the installation needs a drain within reach and, in many cases, a neutraliser before it enters your plumbing. In a basement with no floor drain nearby, that means a condensate pump, and it should be priced at the quote rather than improvised on installation day.

The third is snow. Sidewall terminations get buried in a lake effect event, and a blocked intake shuts a modern furnace or boiler down on safety, which becomes a no heat call in the worst weather of the year. We site terminations with our snow depth in mind and show you where they are so you can keep them clear.

Why Homeowners Trust Reimer for Heating Replacement

We have been keeping Upstate New York warm since 1921, and Buffalo News readers voted us Best of 716 for HVAC in 2025. Over 13,764 Google reviews sit behind that, and they rarely talk about equipment brands. They talk about technicians who turned up, explained what they found, and charged what they quoted.

Every technician who comes to your door is NATE certified and background checked, and you get upfront pricing you approve before any work begins. Because we run heating, cooling, plumbing and electrical under one roof, a job that turns out to need a chimney liner or a panel circuit stays with one company instead of becoming your problem to coordinate. And every heating replacement we carry out is backed by our 100% satisfaction guarantee.
