Your sump pump spends most of its life doing nothing. Then a warm week in March melts a winter of lake effect snow into ground that is still half frozen, or a summer storm drops an inch of rain in an hour, and it becomes the only thing between the water table and your basement floor. That is also when most failures get discovered, because almost nobody tests a sump pump until they need it.
At Reimer, we repair sump pumps and battery backup systems for homeowners across Buffalo and Erie County as part of our wider plumbing services, with plumbers working in Rochester, Hamburg, Cheektowaga, Albany, Syracuse and communities throughout Upstate New York. We have been keeping basements here dry since 1921.
If your pump is running constantly, grinding, tripping a breaker or sitting silent while the basin fills, do not wait for the next storm to find out how bad it is. Most sump pump faults are small and cheap on a Tuesday afternoon and expensive at two in the morning with water rising.
Here is what you get when you call us about a sump pump problem:
- Diagnosis of the pump, the float, the check valve and the discharge line, not just the pump.
- Upfront pricing approved before we start.
- Day or Night service during storms and thaws.
- A 100% satisfaction guarantee on every repair.

What Are the Signs Your Sump Pump Needs Repair?
A storage tank keeps a set volume of water hot and ready to go. A tankless unit heats water as it flows, so it only fires when a tap opens. Both work well in Buffalo and Erie County hoMost of these show up during a test rather than during a flood, which is the entire argument for testing. Pour a bucket of water into the basin and watch what the pump does. Call us if you see any of the following:
- It does not start, or starts late, when the water reaches the float
- It runs constantly, or cycles on and off every few seconds
- It grinds, rattles or hums without moving water
- Water stays in the basin after the pump shuts off
- It trips a breaker or the GFCI
- It vibrates hard enough to move in the basin or knock against the wall
- It is past ten years old and has never been serviced
Constant running is the one homeowners ignore longest, and it is the one that burns motors out. It usually means the pump is undersized for the inflow, short cycling in a basin that is too small, fighting a restricted discharge, or losing water back down the pipe through a failed check valve.
Why Do Sump Pumps Fail in Buffalo and Erie County?
The ground here gives sump pumps more work than most regions. Heavy clay soils shed water rather than absorbing it, and a great deal of the housing stock has full basements dug into that clay. A spring thaw or a summer storm puts more water at your foundation in two days than a pump elsewhere sees in a season.
That workload exposes weak components quickly. Float switches stick or snag on the basin wall. Impellers wear or clog with silt and gravel. Check valves fail and let the column of water in the discharge pipe drain straight back into the basin, so the pump restarts within seconds and never gets ahead. Motors overheat from short cycling. Dedicated circuits trip, and on an older panel the pump sometimes shares a circuit it should never have been on.
Age does the rest. A sump pump running a normal duty cycle here gives around seven to ten years, and less where it has been fighting one of the conditions above for most of that time.
The Discharge Line Is Where Most Sump Pump Failures Start
The pump gets the blame and the discharge line is usually the culprit, which is why we inspect it on every repair call.
In a Buffalo or Rochester winter an exposed discharge line freezes solid. The pump then runs against a plug of ice, overheats and burns out, and the basement floods with the pump still plugged in and apparently working. We see it every February. The fixes are straightforward: correct pitch, adequate diameter, a freeze relief fitting, and a termination that drains rather than sitting in a pool that ices over.
Where the line discharges matters just as much. Sump discharge should go to daylight or an approved storm connection well away from the foundation, or the water simply runs back into the ground it just came from and the pump cycles again. Discharging into the sanitary sewer is prohibited in most municipalities here, and in combined sewer areas it adds storm flow to a system already under pressure, which raises the sewer backup risk for everyone on the street including you. If your pump currently ties into the sanitary line, we will tell you and reroute it.
What Our Sump Pump Repairs Cover
A sump pump is a system rather than a single appliance, so the repair depends on which part of it has failed. The work we carry out most often is:
- Float switch repair and replacement. The most common fault by a wide margin, whether the float is stuck, snagged, waterlogged or misadjusted.
- Check valve replacement. Stops discharged water draining back into the basin and forcing the pump to restart.
- Impeller cleaning and replacement. Clears silt, gravel and debris that have jammed or worn the impeller.
- Discharge line repair. Correcting pitch, diameter, freeze relief and termination, and rerouting a line that discharges in the wrong place.
- Electrical fault diagnosis. Tripping breakers, failed GFCIs and pumps sharing a circuit they should not be on, which our electricians put right.
- Battery backup repair. Testing and replacing the battery, charger and secondary pump on a backup system that has quietly stopped working.
We diagnose the whole system before quoting any of it, because replacing a pump that failed due to a frozen discharge line just buys you the same failure next winter.
Does Your Sump Pump Backup System Still Work?
A battery backup is the part of the system most likely to have failed without anyone noticing, because nothing tells you until the power goes out.
The storm that fills your basement is usually the same storm that takes the power down, so a primary pump on utility power alone has a single point of failure. A backup runs the pump on stored power when the utility is out or the primary pump has died. The battery is a consumable, though, and a backup with a three year old battery is a backup in name only.
We test the battery under load, check the charger and confirm the secondary pump actually runs. Where a whole home generator is installed or planned, the sump circuit should be on it, and our electricians handle that side. A high water alarm is a small addition that warns you the basin is rising before the floor does.
When Does a Sump Pump Repair Become a Replacement?
We repair an isolated fault on a pump in sound condition, and that covers most of what we are called out to. A float switch, a check valve or a blocked impeller on a five year old pump is a straightforward fix.
Replacement makes more sense when the motor has burned out, the pump is past ten years old, it has failed more than once in a couple of seasons, or it was never sized for the inflow your property actually gets. If that is where yours has landed, we will say so and quote the sump pump replacement rather than charging you for a repair that will not hold.
Sump Pump Maintenance That Prevents the Next Repair
Test the pump with a bucket of water twice a year, in autumn before the freeze and in late winter before the thaw. Clear debris from the basin, check the discharge line is open and pitched, and confirm the check valve holds.
A professional service covers what a bucket test cannot reach: a worn impeller, a weakening motor, a check valve on its way out, battery condition on a backup system, and whether the pump is still matched to the inflow your property now sees. Catching any of those in October costs a fraction of what the same fault costs in March.

Sump Pump Service FAQ
Why is my sump pump running constantly?
Common causes are a high water table after heavy rain or thaw, a stuck float, a failed check valve letting discharged water run back into the basin, a restricted discharge line, or a pump undersized for the inflow. Constant running burns motors out, so it is worth diagnosing quickly.
Why is my sump pump humming but not pumping water?
Usually a jammed or worn impeller, a stuck float telling the pump to run when it cannot move water, or a discharge line blocked by ice or debris. The motor is drawing power and getting nowhere, which will damage it if left.
Can a sump pump discharge line freeze?
Yes, and it is one of the most common causes of basement flooding here. An iced discharge means the pump runs against a blockage until it fails. Correct pitch, adequate diameter and a freeze relief fitting prevent it.
Can I discharge my sump pump into the sewer?
No. Most municipalities here prohibit it, and in combined sewer areas it worsens backup risk for the whole street. Discharge should go to daylight or an approved storm connection away from the foundation.
How long does a sump pump repair take?
Most repairs are completed on the first visit, since our vans carry the float switches, check valves and fittings that fail most often. Discharge line rerouting or electrical work can take longer, and we tell you before we start.
My sump pump backup battery is a few years old. Does it need replacing?
Probably. Backup batteries for sump pumps are consumables and lose capacity with age, and a weak one will pass a casual look while failing under load during an outage. We test it properly rather than going by its age alone.
How often should a sump pump be tested?
Twice a year, before the winter freeze and before the spring thaw, plus after any long period when the pump has been inactive.
