How Often Should Smoke and CO₂ Alarms Be Replaced?
New York State guidance is that smoke alarms should be replaced when they fail an operability test or when they exceed ten years from the date of manufacture, unless the manufacturer specifies sooner. Carbon monoxide alarms have shorter lives that vary by model, commonly five to ten years.
Many alarms signal their own end of life with a distinct chirp that people mistake for a low battery and then ignore. If yours chirps after a fresh battery, check the date on the back before buying more batteries. New York also requires that new smoke alarms sold for residential use are either hardwired or powered by a sealed ten year battery, which removes the annual battery change entirely.
Where Should Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms Be Installed?
Coverage matters more than quantity. The requirements that apply depend on the building and the scope of any work, but the residential baseline in New York covers each sleeping room, the area immediately outside each separate sleeping area, and every additional storey including the basement. Carbon monoxide alarms belong on every level and outside sleeping areas.
Placement detail decides whether an alarm stays on the ceiling.
