The water service line runs from the municipal main in the street to the meter inside your house. In most municipalities here, the section from the curb stop to the house belongs to the homeowner, while the utility owns the connection back to the main.

What Are the Signs of an Underground Water Line Leak?

Most of these appear well before there is any visible water. If you recognise more than one, the line is worth investigating:

• Pressure that has dropped across the whole house rather than at one fixture
• A water bill that rose with no change in usage
• A wet, soft or unusually green strip of lawn running from the street toward the house
• Water pooling near the foundation or seeping into the basement on the supply side
• Discoloured water or sediment appearing after a pressure change
• The sound of running water in the house when nothing is switched on

There is also one check you can run yourself in ten minutes. Turn off every fixture in the house and watch the water meter. If the dial keeps moving, water is going somewhere it should not.

Why Water Service Lines Fail in Buffalo and Erie County

Age and material come first. Galvanized service lines corrode inward until the flow chokes off. Older copper develops pinholes, particularly where soil conditions are aggressive. Lead lines still exist in the older housing across Buffalo, Lackawanna and Rochester, and those are a replacement question rather than a repair one.

Then the ground. Repeated freezing and thawing through the winter moves soil around buried utilities and stresses joints that were already weak. In a hard winter, frost can drive deep enough to freeze a shallow service line outright, which is why utilities here sometimes advise running a pencil thin trickle during an extended deep freeze. A line that has frozen once is worth having looked at.

We repair a single failure in a line that is otherwise sound and made of a material worth keeping. We replace when the line is galvanized or lead, has leaked more than once, or has corroded along its length, because repairing one section of a failing material buys you a season rather than a solution.

Replacement does not always mean a trench across the yard. Where conditions allow, a new line can be pulled through, which limits excavation to a pit at each end and leaves the driveway and most of the lawn intact. Which method suits your property depends on the depth, the route, the soil and what sits on top of the line.
