Should You Replace With a Tank or Tankless Water Heater?

For a tank, the figure that matters is first hour rating, which combines stored volume with how quickly the burner or elements recover. Two forty gallon tanks with different recovery rates will not give you the same shower on a Monday morning. For a tankless unit, it is flow rate at the temperature rise you actually need, and that rise is far greater here in February than in the manufacturer’s example.

So we ask practical questions: how many showers run back to back on a weekday morning, whether laundry and the dishwasher run at the same time, and whether there is a soaking tub involved. Then we size from the answers rather than from the label on the old unit.
