In this article, we’ll review some common reasons your air conditioner might not be working or not working right, and what you need to know about each.

Common signs you need HVAC repair services this summer

#1. It’s low on refrigerant

From time-to-time, air conditioners can lose refrigerant. This is not a common occurrence, since the refrigerant exists in a closed-loop system. However, leaks can sometimes develop where small amounts of refrigerant are lost at a time.

This may also be the case if the refrigerant contacts moisture, which could cause it to freeze. When the line becomes frozen, the blockage prevents the cool air from reaching inside.

A spring air conditioning tune-up can address issues with refrigerant levels in your air conditioner.

#2. It’s not connected to the thermostat

Another common air conditioning problem is the thermostat. Luckily, a lot of thermostat issues are simply being set to the wrong settings. Most panels have an “auto” and an “on” section for the unit.

The best setting is “auto,” which allows your air conditioner to kick on and off according to the room temperature. If you’ve accidentally set yours to “on,” you’ll notice it runs continuously, regardless of room temperature. Only use the “on” setting if you have a filtration system installed in your HVAC unit.

#3. There might be a mechanical issue

Sometimes the problem is a larger one, such as the condenser coils or the ductwork. Stalled coils prevent your unit from blowing cool air but won’t stop it completely. This means you’ll assume it’s running properly even if it isn’t.

If the ductwork is the issue, you’ll need a professional. He or she will need to search the ducts for cracks, bends or blockages that make it too hard for the cool air to reach the inside of your home.
