Kitchen Plumbing Tips

Drains tend to be “out of sight, out of mind” until there’s a problem. Like most things in your home, good habits and regular maintenance can help prevent clogs and save you money and a headache. There are things you can do all year round that will help you avoid a clogged sink affecting your holiday meal preparations. Let’s review.

Use a strainer. Most sinks come with a sink strainer or basket, and it is there for a reason. When it comes to kitchen plumbing tips, using a sink strainer over the drain is perhaps the easiest and most inexpensive way to prevent future clogs and blockages. The strainer can catch food particles and other substances that can’t and shouldn’t be washed down the drain. This will greatly reduce the chances of a clogged kitchen drain. It’s important to remember to empty the strainer when it becomes full. If your sink doesn’t have one of these food trapping devices, you should be able to easily find one at a just about any store.

Avoid putting certain foods down your garbage disposal. A garbage disposal, unlike its name, is not meant to be used to dispose of all your garbage, it is designed to get rid of food waste exclusively and not all food materials are safe. We have reviewed before certain food items you should avoid putting down your garbage disposal, but over the holidays there are even more items to consider avoiding washing down the drain. Be extra vigilant if you are preparing a holiday meal and avoid putting these items down your kitchen drain: turkey grease, turkey bones, pasta or rice, eggshells, coffee grounds, and starchy and fibrous fruits and vegetables.

Rinse hot water down the drain on a regular basis. Even if you are careful, a small amount of food and/or fats and grease can make their way down your drain. In order to prevent blockages, it is a good idea to pour boiling hot water down your sink about once a week. Heat some water in a kettle, and pour it slowly down the drain (dummies.com). It is also a good idea, after each use, to run some hot water down the drain to help any small food particles run down the drain and prevent clogs from forming.

Use baking soda to clean and flush your drain. A great kitchen plumbing tip that many people don’t know about, is using baking soda to clean your drain. If you sprinkle baking soda down the drain, at least monthly, you can help prevent blockages and eliminate odors. To clean the drain, it’s recommended that you throw a handful of baking soda, followed by hot water down the drain. Baking soda can not only clean the plumbing of accumulated waste but, as mentioned, it also absorbs foul smells.

When it comes to your kitchen plumbing, it is major problem if you have blockages or issues, especially if you are in the middle of preparing a meal. The good news is, in most cases, by following some simple kitchen plumbing tips, you can avoid this from happening.
